Computing

Statement of Intent

The use of computing equipment and other sources of technology is an integral part of the National Curriculum and is a key skill for everyday life in a rapidly-changing world. Computers, tablets and programmable robots are a few of the tools that can be used to acquire, organise, store, manipulate, interpret, communicate and present information.

At Wath Central, the intention is for children to develop the skills necessary for children to be able to use digital devices and information in an effective way and become confident, independent and safe users of technological devices.

To do this, Wath Central aim:

1.     To encourage children to acquire and develop key knowledge and understanding of programming, information technology and digital literacy.

2.     To provide a relevant, challenging and enjoyable curriculum for ICT and computing for all pupils that meets the requirements within the National Curriculum.

3.     To use ICT and computing as a tool to enhance learning throughout the curriculum.

4.     To equip pupils with the confidence and capability to use ICT and computing throughout their later life.

5.     To explore attitudes towards Computing and its value and potential dangers to the individual and society in general.

Implementation - Computing at Wath Central

To establish a broad range of skills and understanding, Computing is taught across three main strands: digital literacy, computer science and information technology within blocks of learning.

As part of information technology, children learn to use and express themselves and develop their ideas through ICT for example writing and presenting as well as exploring art and design using multimedia. Within digital literacy, children develop practical skills in the safe use of ICT and the ability to apply these skills to solving relevant, worthwhile problems for example understanding safe use of internet, networks and email. In computer science we teach children

to understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation.

Curriculum Overview

Implementation - E-Safety at Wath Central

At Wath Central, online safety is woven throughout our curriculum. Through tailored lessons, focus weeks, collaboration with external outcomes and the delivery of our philosophical concepts, Wath Central strives to prepare children for safe and responsible online use.   We understand that computer technology is an essential resource for supporting teaching and learning. The internet, and other digital and information technologies, open up opportunities for pupils and play an important role in their everyday lives. Whilst the school recognises the importance of promoting the use of computer technology throughout the curriculum, we also understand the need for safe internet access and appropriate use.

Each year, children revisit prior learning and awareness whilst developing their awareness further with age appropriate content. The focus of each year group, alongside revisiting previous learning is shown within the progression map below. Please visit our e-safety information page for more details on how to keep your child safe online.

E-Safety - online safety for all!

At Wath Central, we pride ourselves on preparing children and supporting children in both today's and tomorrow's world. Online safety is a significant part of personal security in the modern world.

In school, we liaise with the police, online support communities and wider partnerships to integrate e-safety into our computing sessions through open and honest discussions whilst raising the dangers of inappropriate Internet use.
