Physical Education

Statement of Curriculum Intent

Our overriding intention here at Wath Central Primary, is that when teaching the PE Curriculum, we develop the enjoyment of physical activity. It is our vision for every pupil to succeed and achieve their potential as well as to lead physically active lifestyles, which they will carry into adulthood. We strive to inspire our pupils through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all as well as providing all our children with the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular club and competitions. These experiences create memories of joy that they will remember following their primary school careers. Through our teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for both KS1 and KS2 pupils to embed life-long values and transferrable life skills such as: respect, aspiration and resilience.

Every class is timetabled to receive 2 hours of high-quality PE teaching every week.

The PE Curriculum is mapped to ensure that there is a broad coverage of sports and skills which link to local area competitions.

A wide variety of Extra-curricular sports clubs provide children, who would not normally get the opportunity to participate in a sport, with an opportunity to experience it.

Staff are confident to deliver PE lessons and this is supported through the delivery of relevant in-school training by our academy’s PE Specialist and also signposting staff to appropriate PE courses. Through investing in a whole school PE scheme, this ensures progression in skills – not only of the pupils but also of staff.

The profile of PE is high in the school, promoting the importance of leading healthy lifestyles. This is achieved by celebrating sporting successes on the PE noticeboard, on the school website and in whole school assemblies. We are in partnership with Modeshift Stars (Active Travel) who come in and do regular workshop that promotes active travel, cycling skills and road safety in and around school. These workshops range from ‘ditch the stabilisers’, where children in KS1 are taught to cycle without stabilisers, to ‘Bling Your Bike’ days and Road safety workshops. Active travel is regularly promoted within our school and this is highlighted by us achieving Bronze Accreditation for our efforts towards active travel.

Children are also encouraged to develop leadership skills in lessons by leading warm-ups and taking on the role of a coach, working with peers to help them improve in a specific area.

Two children from each Y5 and Y6 class are elected as a Sports Councillor, having the opportunity to get involved and make a difference with whole-school sports and activities.

In order to enhance sporting and health awareness, we, as a school, take part in a number of nationwide initiatives such as: Sports Relief, Fit February, National Skipping Day and School Sports Week.
